A column-store analytics database out of the Stonebraker camp; HP bought it in 2011 to meet the demand for fast reporting.

Vertica grew in 2005 out of the C-Store research project and bore Michael Stonebraker's signature: store data column by column rather than row by row. For analytical queries that touch only a few columns across billions of rows that is dramatically faster, and columns of similar values compress hard. Instead of indexes, Vertica uses projections — precomputed sorted copies of the data — and spreads the work across a shared-nothing cluster.

HP bought the company in 2011 and parked it in its software division, from where it wandered on to Micro Focus and then OpenText.
