The half of Hewlett-Packard that got to keep the name, the PCs and — above all — the ink cartridges.
On 1 November 2015 Hewlett-Packard split in two. Servers, storage and services became Hewlett Packard Enterprise, while PCs and printers stayed with the legally original company, which was renamed HP Inc. The split mirrored two different businesses: one sells to IT departments, the other to everyone else.
Much of the money comes from consumables. HP Inc has repeatedly pushed firmware updates that make printers refuse third-party ink cartridges, earning it class actions in several countries. The Instant Ink subscription solves the problem its own way: the printer orders its own ink. The company bought Samsung's printer division in 2017 and Poly in 2022.
