HPE's answer to the cloud — pay-per-use for hardware that sits in your own datacenter instead of Amazon's.

Launched in 2017 as metered, consumption-based infrastructure installed on the customer's premises: you get cloud-style billing and elasticity without moving data off-site. It was a direct response to AWS and Azure eroding HPE's sales of physical servers.

Between 2019 and 2021 HPE pledged to make its entire portfolio available as a service and positioned GreenLake as an "edge-to-cloud" platform. Whether metered iron on your own floor truly competes with hyperscale cloud is the open question the whole model rests on.
