One of the first services to move the whole development environment into the cloud — click a link, get a ready-made editor and terminal in the browser.
Gitpod launched in 2019, built by Sven Efftinge and Johannes Landgraf, the founders of the tooling company TypeFox in Kiel. The idea was to skip hours of setup: from any Git repo, the service spins up a pre-configured container with code, dependencies and a VS Code-based editor, all in the browser.
The concept came to be called a CDE, a cloud development environment, and soon faced competition from GitHub Codespaces and Replit. In 2024 Gitpod retired its self-hosted edition and reshaped itself around "Gitpod Flex" — a move that annoyed much of the self-hosting open-source crowd it had first been built for.
