A browser-based development environment where you write, run and deploy code straight in the browser without installing anything locally.
Amjad Masad, with his brother Faris and Haya Odeh, started the service in 2016 (long spelled "Repl.it"). The name comes from the REPL — the interactive loop where you type a line of code and see the result at once. Everything runs in cloud containers; a shareable link is enough for someone else to edit and run the same project, which made it popular in schools.
In recent years the company has swung its centre of gravity towards AI: a built-in agent that writes and deploys whole apps from a prompt. It now competes as much with Vercel and GitHub Codespaces as with classic editors.
