A lightweight self-hosted Git forge in a single binary — GitHub's whole workflow in a can you run yourself.

Started in 2016 as a fork of Gogs, driven by Lunny Xiao and a volunteer community that wanted faster development than the original offered. Written in Go and shipped as a single executable, which makes it a favourite on home servers and in small organisations that want pull requests, issues and CI without paying or handing over their code.

In 2022 a company formed around the project, which upset part of the community who feared a commercial takeover. The answer was yet another fork, Forgejo, carried on by Codeberg. Free software forking itself is a tradition.
