Known for
Mixminion, research on anonymity and traffic analysis

The anonymity researcher who has spent two decades asking how much metadata gives away when the content is encrypted.

In 2003 Danezis designed Mixminion with Roger Dingledine and Nick Mathewson — the third generation of anonymous remailers, with single-use reply blocks and protection against replayed messages. In parallel Dingledine and Mathewson were building Tor, which picked up where mix networks were too slow for web traffic.

At Cambridge, Microsoft Research and later as a professor at UCL, his work has mostly shown how attackers can infer who talks to whom from traffic patterns alone — including the much-cited 2005 Tor attack with Steven Murdoch. He later moved into distributed ledgers and in 2021 co-founded Mysten Labs, the company behind the Sui blockchain.
