The Tor Project
Known for
Tor, Free Haven

MIT-trained computer scientist who built Tor together with Nick Mathewson and Paul Syverson.

Onion routing began as a project at the US Naval Research Laboratory, where Syverson was one of the researchers. Dingledine and Mathewson, who had previously run the Free Haven anonymous storage project, reworked the concept into Tor, first released in 2002. The EFF funded the work for a while, and in 2006 The Tor Project became an independent non-profit with Dingledine as project leader.

He has spent a great deal of time explaining that an anonymity network needs ordinary users: if only dissidents and criminals use it, merely being seen on it gives you away. That the same network has been funded by the US government and attacked by the NSA keeps the explaining permanently topical.
