AMD's open upscaling technology: render the game at a lower resolution and reconstruct a sharper image — hardware-agnostic, with no dedicated AI silicon.

FidelityFX Super Resolution launched in June 2021. Version 1 was a pure spatial upscaler: it looks only at the finished frame, finds edges and sharpens, and therefore runs on almost any graphics card. FSR 2 (2022) went temporal — weighing in motion vectors and depth from several frames to close on DLSS quality, still without machine learning or special hardware. FSR 3 (2023) added frame generation.

The point is the openness: the source sits MIT-licensed on GPUOpen and the technique is not locked to AMD's own cards, unlike NVIDIA's DLSS, which needs Tensor cores. That makes FSR the common denominator game developers can lean on whatever GPU the player happens to have.
