Identity company built by former Sun staff on the remains of OpenSSO after Oracle lost interest in it.
When Oracle bought Sun in 2010, Sun's open-source SSO server OpenSSO landed on the end-of-life list. A group of ex-Sun engineers in Norway forked the code and founded ForgeRock that same year. OpenSSO became OpenAM, the OpenDS directory server became OpenDJ, and the company sold support and licences to organisations that saw no reason to rip out working SSO just because the new owner had changed its plans.
Headquarters moved to San Francisco and the company went public in New York in 2021. Its time on the market was brief: private equity firm Thoma Bravo bought ForgeRock and in 2023 merged it with Ping Identity, which it already owned. Two of Okta's biggest rivals thereby became one.
