The Denver company selling federated login to large enterprises long before anyone called it an identity platform.
Andre Durand founded Ping Identity in 2002, when SAML was new and most companies still had one password per system. Its flagship, PingFederate, became a standard fixture at banks and government agencies that wanted SSO to partners and cloud services without giving up their own Active Directory.
Where Okta was cloud-first, Ping long sold software the customer ran itself, which suited industries that didn't trust anyone else's cloud. It went public in 2019, was taken private by Thoma Bravo in 2022 and merged with rival ForgeRock in 2023.
