One of Sweden's oldest software houses, best known for the real-time operating system that quietly ran inside much of the world's mobile network.
Founded in 1968, Enea made its name with OSE, a real-time operating system for embedded devices built around message passing between processes. OSE ended up in Ericsson base stations and in handsets from several manufacturers — places where deadlines are measured in microseconds and a reboot is not an option.
The company was also early to the network: in the 1980s Enea served as Sweden's node in the European EUnet network, and so as the gateway for much of the country's early email and Usenet. Today it mainly sells software for telecom operators' core networks.
