A foundation-owned Swedish company running a large share of the country's internet plumbing — the kind nobody thinks about until it stops working.

Netnod operates internet exchange points in several Swedish cities, where operators interconnect directly instead of hauling traffic abroad and back. It also runs i.root-servers.net, one of the internet's thirteen root name servers, spread around the world using anycast.

On top of that, Netnod distributes Sweden's official time over NTP on behalf of the national telecoms regulator, fed by atomic clocks in hardened facilities. The owner is a foundation rather than a profit-seeking company, and that is deliberate: neutrality is the whole point when competing operators have to share the same switch.
