Limelight Networks, Edgecast

The merger of two CDN challengers that was meant to create a strong number three and produced a bankruptcy within two years.

Edgio came into being in 2022 when Limelight Networks bought Edgecast and the combined company took a new name. The pitch was that two mid-sized networks together could hold their own against Akamai, Cloudflare and Fastly, with security and an application platform layered on top of delivery.

It didn't work. CDN prices kept sliding, integration dragged on, and in 2023 the company had to restate earlier financial results. In September 2024 Edgio filed for Chapter 11, and Akamai picked up a slice of its customer contracts — so Limelight's old patent adversary ended up inheriting the customers.
