Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-18

The researcher whose MacBook hack at Black Hat 2006 became one of the industry's nastiest disputes over responsible disclosure.

At Black Hat 2006, Maynor and Jon "Johnny Cache" Ellch showed a video of a MacBook being taken over through a flaw in a Wi-Fi driver. The demo used a third-party card, which led Apple and parts of the Mac press to accuse them of overselling. The researchers said the bug also existed in Apple's own drivers but withheld the details. Apple later patched several wireless vulnerabilities without crediting anyone.

Nobody came out of it with their credibility fully intact, and the episode still gets cited whenever people argue about what a researcher owes a vendor. Maynor went on to co-found Errata Security with Robert Graham.
