Austin McChord founded the company in 2007 in Connecticut around a simple insight: small businesses rarely buy backup themselves, but their IT providers buy it for them. The products are appliance plus cloud — a box on the customer's premises that mirrors the servers and can spin up a virtual copy within minutes if the hardware dies, with a second copy in Datto's own cloud. The model became the template for the whole BCDR industry. The company went public in 2020 and was bought in 2022 by Kaseya for around $6.2 billion — one of the larger deals in the MSP-tooling scene.
