Crytek's game engine — a graphics benchmark since Far Cry in 2004, and the origin of the question "but can it run Crysis?".

Germany's Crytek (founded by the Yerli brothers in 1999) showed off the engine with Far Cry in 2004, then pushed the envelope again with Crysis in 2007 — a game so demanding it became a running hardware joke for a decade. CryEngine was long known for its lighting and draw distance across large outdoor scenes.

Amazon's Lumberyard (now Open 3D Engine) was built on a licensed version. Proprietary, with a royalty model.
