Ken Silverman's mid-90s 2.5D engine — the rival to Doom's engine, and the foundation of Duke Nukem 3D.

Ken Silverman wrote Build as a teenager for 3D Realms, a contemporary of and competitor to id Software's Doom engine. Like Doom it was really 2.5D: walls and floors were described by sectors, not true 3D geometry, and everything that moved was drawn as a sprite.

Where the Doom engine sorted rooms with BSP trees, Build used portals instead, which left room for sloped floors, room-over-room and destructible scenery. It powered Duke Nukem 3D (1996), Shadow Warrior and Blood. Silverman released the source in 2000; the EDuke32 project keeps it running.
