Blip Festival

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-03

The New York chiptune festival that moved music made on Game Boys and old home computers out of forum threads and into packed venues.

The first edition ran in December 2006, organised by the label and collective 8bitpeoples together with the arts space The Tank. Over four nights, artists from several continents played Game Boys running LSDj and Nanoloop, NES consoles, Commodore 64s and Amigas, usually in front of blocky light shows. It returned every year until 2012 and spun off editions in Tokyo and Australia, among other places.

The documentary Reformat the Planet (2008) was shot at that first festival and became, for many, their introduction to chiptune as a scene rather than as game audio. It also showed the genre had an audience beyond demoparties: people who had never heard of a tracker but were happy to dance to one.
