New Zealand hacker who made cash machines spew banknotes on stage, then turned his attention to medical devices.

At Black Hat 2010 Barnaby Jack wheeled out two ordinary ATMs and made them pay out — one with physical access, one entirely over the network. The term jackpotting stuck, and vendors patched with unusual speed; nothing motivates quite like footage of a cash machine behaving like a slot machine.

He then moved on to implants, showing in 2011 how insulin pumps could be commandeered wirelessly from a distance, and was preparing a pacemaker demonstration when he died in San Francisco in July 2013, a week before the talk. His work is often cited among the reasons the FDA began setting security expectations for connected medical devices.
