Austrian automation firm behind Automation Studio and the POWERLINK real-time network, part of ABB since 2017.

B&R — after founders Erwin Bernecker and Josef Rainer — started in 1979 in Eggelsberg. Its strength is a single engineering environment, Automation Studio, that covers PLC logic, motion control and visualisation in one tool, running on X20 I/O and ACOPOS servos.

In 2001 the company produced Ethernet POWERLINK, one of the first open real-time industrial-Ethernet solutions, answering the fact that plain Ethernet offered no timing guarantees. ABB bought B&R in 2017 to close a gap in its automation portfolio. It is strong in packaging and plastics machinery.
