Enterprise wireless run centrally from a controller, and these days HPE's networking division.

Keerti Melkote and Pankaj Manglik founded Aruba in Sunnyvale in 2002, when office Wi-Fi mostly meant standalone access points, each configured on its own. Aruba's idea was a central controller managing every access point, radio channel and permission, so that a whole campus behaved like one network. The ClearPass add-on decided which devices were allowed on at all.

HP bought the company in 2015 for about $3 billion, shortly before splitting itself in two, and Aruba landed in Hewlett Packard Enterprise. There the name became the umbrella for the whole networking business, SD-WAN included, and since 2023 it has been called HPE Aruba Networking.
