Occupation
Journalist, Wired
Known for
Sandworm (2019), Tracers in the Dark (2022)

The Wired reporter who was behind the wheel when hackers took over a Jeep on the highway.

In the summer of 2015 Greenberg drove a Jeep Cherokee on a St. Louis highway while Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, sitting in a house some ten miles away, took over the air conditioning, the radio and finally the accelerator through the car's cellular connection. The story led Fiat Chrysler to recall 1.4 million vehicles.

His books are the heavier contribution. This Machine Kills Secrets (2012) is about leak platforms and cypherpunks, Sandworm (2019) about the Russian military intelligence unit behind the Ukrainian blackouts and NotPetya, and Tracers in the Dark (2022) about how investigators learned to follow bitcoin, which many had assumed was anonymous.
