The free tool that kept the point-and-click adventure alive after the big publishers had given up on it.

Chris Jones released the first version for DOS in 1997, just as the genre LucasArts and SCUMM had defined was fading commercially. AGS gives you rooms, hotspots, inventory and dialogue trees out of the box, plus a C-like scripting language for everything else.

Thousands of hobby games followed, and some commercial ones: Wadjet Eye Games built the Blackwell series, Gemini Rue and Unavowed with it. The source was opened in 2010 and the community has maintained it since. Low-resolution pixel art isn't a limitation here; it's the point.
