Adaptec
In the SCSI era the company's name was effectively a synonym for the card you slotted into a machine to attach hard drives, scanners and CD burners.
Founded in 1981 in Milpitas, California. Adaptec dominated the market for SCSI host-bus adapters on PCs, servers and Macs through the 1980s and 90s; "an Adaptec card" was long shorthand for SCSI itself. The company also made RAID controllers and for a while owned the popular Easy CD Creator burning software.
As SCSI gave way to cheaper SATA and SAS in the consumer world, the core business shrank. The storage division was sold to PMC-Sierra in 2010, and the Adaptec brand drifted on via Microsemi to Microchip — today mostly a memory of the days when every serious workstation had a SCSI card.
