Moved the corporate firewall into the cloud and routed everyone's traffic through itself on the way.
Jay Chaudhry, a serial founder who had already sold several security companies, started Zscaler in San Jose in 2007 with K. Kailash. The pitch: a proxy and firewall in the server room are in the wrong place once users work from cafés and the applications live in the cloud. Traffic goes to Zscaler's own data centres instead, where it is inspected, filtered and sent on.
Zscaler Internet Access is effectively a cloud-hosted proxy for web traffic; Zscaler Private Access grants access to internal applications along ZTNA lines. Together they are a textbook example of what Gartner calls SASE. The company listed on Nasdaq in 2018. The price of the convenience is that a Zscaler outage is an outage for every customer at once.
