Known for
ZMap, Censys

The researcher who turned scanning the entire IPv4 internet into an afternoon job.

As a PhD student under Alex Halderman at Michigan, he released ZMap with Eric Wustrow in 2013: a scanner that drops per-connection state and can hit every IPv4 address on one port in under 45 minutes, where Nmap measured the job in weeks. Suddenly the security of the internet could be measured as a whole rather than guessed at.

He worked on "Mining Your Ps and Qs" (2012) with Nadia Heninger, led the measurement of how Heartbleed was patched — or wasn't — and founded Censys, a search engine over the scan results. He now teaches at Stanford.
