Thin clients whose only job is to display a desktop that runs somewhere else.

Wyse Technology, founded in 1981, made terminals — a screen, a keyboard, and just enough electronics to talk to a distant computer. As the PC took over, the business looked doomed, but the idea was reborn with desktop virtualisation: a small, silent, nearly indestructible box that streams a Windows or Linux desktop from the server room over Citrix or VDI.

Dell bought Wyse in 2012 and made the brand its thin-client line. The ThinOS operating system boots in seconds and has such a small attack surface that it is barely possible to infect. For hospitals, call centres and schools — places with many identical workstations and strict security demands — it is still an obvious fit.
