WorkOS was founded in 2019 by Michael Grinich and sells the dull but mandatory checkboxes: login via SAML, user provisioning via SCIM, directory sync and audit logs. Rather than have every startup implement SAML from scratch — notoriously fiddly — WorkOS wraps it behind a single, uniform API.
The positioning is blunt: "Stripe for enterprise-ready." It competes at the edges with Auth0 and Okta, but targets the developer rather than the IT department.
