Window manager

A minimalist 1990s window manager, instantly recognisable by the window title sitting on a tab down the side instead of across the top.

Chris Cannam built wm2 with 9wm as its model and the same principles: no configuration file, no icons on the desktop, a single menu. What set it apart was the frame. The title lived in a narrow tab running vertically down the window's left edge, and the frame had shaped corners that relied on X's Shape extension.

Changing a setting meant editing the source and recompiling, which was as much a stance as an oversight. Its successor wmx was looser about features and gained channels, a form of virtual desktops. Cannam later became better known for the audio analysis program Sonic Visualiser.
