The video-meeting platform that ruled the corporate world for a decade before Zoom ran away from it.
Founded in 1995 by Subrah Iyar and Min Zhu as one of the first web-based services for sharing a screen and holding meetings over the internet. Cisco bought the company in 2007 for around $3.2 billion and made Webex its standard for video conferencing — in many large enterprises it was simply "the meeting tool."
When the 2020 pandemic pushed the entire world remote, it was Zoom, not Webex, that became the verb. Webex was seen as clunky and enterprise-bound while Zoom was one click away. Cisco has since rebuilt the product, but the top spot never came back — a reminder that incumbents rarely survive a sudden shift in what users reach for.
