The London company that coined GitOps, gave away its best product and closed down while that product carried on.
Weaveworks launched in 2014 and first made its name with Weave Net, an overlay network for containers from the days before Kubernetes had settled the matter. In 2017 CEO Alexis Richardson wrote the blog post that named GitOps: the cluster's desired state lives in Git, and an agent inside the cluster pulls changes in rather than a build server pushing them.
That agent was Flux, donated to the CNCF, where it reached graduated status. Good for Flux, less so for the business model, since rival Argo CD was just as free. A planned acquisition fell through, and in February 2024 Weaveworks announced it was shutting down. Flux is maintained by others.
