A Boston company selling S3-compatible storage at a flat price per terabyte, which has made not charging for egress its entire personality.
David Friend and Jeff Flowers, who had earlier started the backup company Carbonite, founded Wasabi in 2015, and the service opened in 2017. The pitch is narrow: object storage speaking the same API as S3, so existing tools work after changing an endpoint, but without billing every download.
Egress fees are what make the big clouds expensive to leave, a form of lock-in that only shows up on the invoice. Wasabi charges none, but has a fair-use rule for customers who download more than they store and a 90-day minimum storage period. Not free, then, just predictable. Its nearest rival in the niche is Backblaze.
