vmsnet.*
An alternative Usenet hierarchy for users of DEC's VMS — the Unix world's network, used by the other camp.
Usenet was born on Unix, but plenty of machines in university and corporate machine rooms ran VMS from DEC. News software such as ANU News let them join in, and around 1990 the VMS crowd got a hierarchy of its own outside the Big 8, for everything that wouldn't fit in comp.os.vms.
The groups covered system administration, DECnet networking, VAX hardware and later Alpha. Like alt.* and other alternative branches, it was created outside the usual voting process and carried only by servers that chose to carry it. It shrank in step with the shrinking number of VMS installations.
