Victor Shoup
American cryptographer behind Cramer–Shoup encryption, the generic group model and the NTL number theory library.
In 1997 Shoup formalised the generic group model, in which an attacker may only manipulate group elements through an oracle. Within it one can prove that discrete logarithms take roughly the square root of the group's size in work. The following year, with Ronald Cramer, he presented the first practical encryption scheme secure against adaptive chosen-ciphertext attacks without leaning on the random oracle model.
He is also known for showing in 2001 that the accepted security proof for RSA-OAEP had a gap — a reminder that proofs need reviewing too. Shoup wrote the C++ library NTL, the textbook A Computational Introduction to Number Theory and Algebra and, with Shai Halevi, the homomorphic encryption library HElib. He is a professor at NYU.
