The security company that works out who can actually reach which files, and usually finds the answer is "everyone".
Yaki Faitelson and Ohad Korkus founded Varonis in 2005 on a simple observation: permissions on the average file server have been accreting for fifteen years and nobody has ever cleaned them up. Its DatAdvantage product read the ACLs, group memberships in Active Directory and real access patterns, then showed which folders were quietly open to the entire domain.
The company listed on Nasdaq in 2014 and has since moved to SaaS, extending coverage to Microsoft 365 and cloud storage. Ransomware made the pitch sharper: whoever encrypts a file server encrypts everything the compromised user can touch, and that is nearly always more than anyone assumed.
