utzoo
The Zoology department's machine at the University of Toronto, where Henry Spencer spent a decade saving Usenet to tape.
Nobody planned for a zoology department to become one of Usenet's key Canadian hubs, but that is where Henry Spencer worked. utzoo was the Canadian junction for news over UUCP, and it was there that Spencer and Geoff Collyer built C News to replace the increasingly sluggish B News.
Spencer also did something nobody else bothered with: from 1981 to 1991 he copied the news feed onto magnetic tape. When Google bought the Deja News archive in 2001, the earliest years were missing, and the utzoo tapes filled the gap. That is why Usenet's oldest threads — flame wars, source postings and newbie questions included — can still be read as if they were posted yesterday.
