USENET Cookbook

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-06

A cookbook assembled by Usenet's readers, published one recipe at a time through a moderated newsgroup in the 1980s.

Brian Reid moderated mod.recipes from the mid-1980s. Submissions were vetted, typeset in a fixed troff format and posted so anyone could print them and file them in a binder. The collection became the USENET Cookbook, one of the first books written collectively over a computer network.

It was more than a curiosity. The project showed that moderation, a consistent format and free distribution could turn thousands of strangers' contributions into something lasting — the same recipe, so to speak, that later produced FAQ documents and wikis. After the Great Renaming the group carried on as rec.food.recipes.
