Serverless data platform that bills per request instead of per hour — Redis, Kafka and vector search with no server to run.
Founded in 2020, it filled a gap the serverless wave had opened: functions that spin up and die in milliseconds sit badly with a database that wants a standing connection and a monthly bill. Upstash offers Redis-compatible key-value storage, a message queue via QStash, a Kafka service and a vector database — all over HTTP and priced per request, so an idle app costs nothing. The service grew popular in edge environments like Vercel and Cloudflare Workers. Redis's 2024 licence change, and the Valkey fork, simultaneously put pressure on everyone running Redis as a managed service.
