Industry consortium

Four smaller Linux vendors' attempt at a shared enterprise distribution to take on Red Hat – an alliance that lasted about a year and a half.

Announced in May 2002 by Caldera, Conectiva, SuSE and Turbolinux. SuSE built the actual codebase; the others would sell and support it in their own territories – Latin America, Asia and so on. UnitedLinux 1.0 shipped in November 2002, and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 was built on it.

Then things moved fast. Caldera renamed itself SCO Group and in March 2003 sued IBM over alleged Unix code in Linux – while still a member of a Linux alliance. When Novell bought SuSE in early 2004, the consortium was wound up. Red Hat never had to lift a finger.
