The Romanian startup that built software robots to click through other programs for you, and rode the RPA wave all the way to the stock exchange.

Started in 2005 in Bucharest by Daniel Dines and Marius Tîrcă, originally as a consultancy called DeskOver. It pivoted to robotic process automation and took the UiPath name in 2015: software that automates repetitive desktop tasks by mimicking a human's clicks and keystrokes in the interface, rather than integrating with the underlying systems. That made it a hit with banks and insurers full of legacy applications that had no APIs.

It listed on the NYSE in 2021 under the ticker PATH at a valuation above $30 billion. Since then generative AI has crept into the same niche and strained the story that robots clicking buttons are the future. Its main rivals are Automation Anywhere and Blue Prism.
