The Motif builder with a built-in C interpreter, so you could click a button and watch its callback run without compiling, and which HP and IBM sold under their own names.
Visual Edge Software of Montreal built UIM/X around 1990. The unusual part was test mode: the interface you had drawn could be run inside the builder, with the callback code interpreted by a C interpreter, so edit-compile-link-run became edit-click. For a Motif program on a workstation of that era, that could save minutes per iteration. The result was then generated as ordinary C, with the interface and the user's own code in separate files.
Visual Edge sold mostly through others: HP packaged it as Interface Architect for HP VUE and HP-UX, IBM as AIX Interface Composer for AIXwindows. That made UIM/X the builder many Motif programmers got thrown in without ever knowing who had written it. When the Motif market shrank after CDE, the product left more quietly than it had arrived.
