Networking equipment

American networking vendor that sold its way into homelabs and small businesses with tidy hardware, central management and almost no marketing.

Robert Pera had worked on Wi-Fi at Apple and thought decent radio gear was overpriced. The company began with long-range radio cards and links for small rural ISPs, many of them in developing countries. The UniFi line later brought the same idea indoors: access points, switches and cameras run from a single interface with no licence fees.

Sales go through distributors and community forums rather than a sales force, which has kept costs low. The security record is patchier. In 2015 the company lost $46.7 million to business email compromise — fraudulent payment requests. In 2021 an employee stole data, tried to extort the company and then posed as a whistleblower to the press. He was sentenced to six years in prison in 2023.
