Zero-trust network access (ZTNA) that replaces the corporate VPN with per-resource permissions instead of per-network ones.

Twingate was founded in 2019 and launched broadly in 2020 as a modern replacement for VPN. Instead of admitting a client to the whole network — the VPN's classic weakness — Twingate connects each user to individual resources on the zero-trust principle: nobody gets more than they explicitly need.

It lives in the same pen as the mesh VPNs Tailscale and ZeroTier and cloud services like Zscaler, but with the emphasis on access control rather than on the tunnel itself.
