The graphics chips enthusiasts checked for on the back of the box around 1990, before 3D made them obsolete.
Tseng Laboratories of Pennsylvania sold chips to board makers rather than boards of its own. The ET3000 (1987) and especially the ET4000 (1989) were household names of the SVGA era: the ET4000 was among the fastest chips at shovelling pixels under DOS, and gamers in Mode 13h and higher resolutions could feel the difference. The accelerated ET4000/W32 followed on the VLB and PCI buses.
Competition from S3, ATI and Matrox got tougher, and when 3dfx showed what 3D acceleration could do, Tseng had nothing ready to answer it. The graphics business was sold to Creative in the late 1990s.
