Trialware
A complete program that stops working after an evaluation period, usually 30 days.
Where crippleware takes away features, trialware takes away time. Everything works out of the box, and after a fixed period – or a set number of launches – the program refuses to run without a licence key. The licence is time-limited from the start, so any use afterwards is unlicensed.
Early implementations were naive: the install date sat in a file or the Windows registry, and winding back the clock or deleting a key often did the trick, spawning a whole genre of "trial reset" tools. Later versions checked in with an activation server. The model lives on in SaaS's "free for 14 days", where the clock runs on the vendor's server and can no longer be fooled.
