Security company

Antivirus company with Taiwanese roots, a Los Angeles start and a Tokyo headquarters – unusual in an industry otherwise dominated by the US, Russia and Israel.

Steve Chang, his wife Jenny Chang and her sister Eva Chen founded the company in 1988. It soon moved to Japan and is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Like Symantec and Sophos, it started with classic antivirus and has since spread into enterprise and cloud security.

Among researchers its best-known asset is the Zero Day Initiative, which came along when Trend Micro bought TippingPoint from HP in 2015. ZDI buys zero-day vulnerabilities from independent researchers, reports them to vendors and runs the Pwn2Own hacking contest.
