Known for
SSLeay (1995)
Collaborator
Eric Young

The other half of SSLeay — the Australian who wrote much of the code around Eric Young's crypto, then spent decades on key-management standards.

When Eric Young started a free SSL implementation in Brisbane in 1995, Hudson built a lot of what surrounded it: certificate handling, tooling and the documentation that made the library usable by anyone else. His initials, tjh, ended up scattered through the source just like Young's eay.

In 1998 RSA Security hired them both, SSLeay froze, and its users forked it as OpenSSL. Hudson later co-founded Cryptsoft and became a driving force in the OASIS work on KMIP and PKCS #11 — far less glamorous than SSL, but that's where the keys actually live. After Heartbleed he returned to OpenSSL's management committee.
