Finland's Tieto was founded in 1968 and merged with Norway's EVRY in 2019. The result is one of the largest hosting and outsourcing firms in the Nordics, with customers who rarely mention it by name but would grind to a halt without it.
That became clear in January 2024, when the Akira ransomware group encrypted part of a data centre in Stockholm. Payroll for Swedish government agencies through Statens servicecenter, several municipalities and a number of retail chains went down for days or weeks. The incident became a textbook case of what concentration risk looks like in practice.
