Thomas Roth

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-18

German hardware security researcher, better known as "stacksmashing", who turned voltage glitching of microcontrollers into something you can watch on YouTube.

At 35C3 in 2018, Roth, Josh Datko and Dmitry Nedospasov — presenting as wallet.fail — showed how hardware wallets from Ledger and Trezor fell to an attacker with physical access. In 2021 he glitched the nRF chip in Apple's AirTag, dumped its firmware and rewrote it; the readout protection turned out to be one brief dip in supply voltage away from useless.

He has also taken apart Nintendo's Game & Watch re-release and co-founded the training site Hextree. The common thread is teaching: fault injection no longer requires a lab full of million-dollar oscilloscopes.
